Firefly Handmade Market is this weekend
Holiday gifting can be attended by an undeniable undercurrent of discontent, but there are always a few presents (usually from your coolest aunt) that rise above the let down of branded gifts. Genuinely ooed and awed, these gifts are treasured and complimented year round. Most assuredly they are handmade; true originals.
So if you want to be like the cool aunt, go to this weekend’s Firefly Handmade Holiday Market, a curated gathering of choice local artisans selling any and every interesting thing. I would list these things generically, but that would so diminish the incredibly rich visual experience that is this market. Just go.
Held indoors in the big warm space once occupied by Borders Bookstore at 16th and Pearl, the $3 all-weekend admission is well worthwhile, and kids 12 and younger are free.
In addition to 80 local artisans (twice as many applied), the event features all kinds of deliciousness by Shamane’s Bakery, children’s art activities by Clementine Studio, and a free self-serve wrapping station by Two Hands Paperie.
So many terrific artisans. Don’t miss any of them, but be sure to see:
Swoon Jewelry Studios Celebrated locally and known nationally for its Hot Mama and Sugar Soul brands, this Louisville based maker of jewelry “celebrates childhood, motherhood and joyful relationships.”
Spinster Sisters This nearly 20-year-old sisterly collaboration was originally (and still is) inspired to create alternatives to the “witches brew of chemicals modern skin care represents.” Offering a wonderously clean and simple line of soaps, shampoos, scrubs, lotions and more – all beautifully packaged.
A Monster to Love It’s easy to love a company that gives away one product for each one it sells, but we’d love A Monster to Love no matter what because its stuffies are so fantastic. A father-and-young-sons collaboration, the monsters are designed and produced by locals Ray, Sam and Ben Tollison. “When you buy a Monster to Love, we give one to a child in need . . . a child who could really use a monster to love!”
