104 — That’s the number of awards taken by BVSD middle and high school students in the Colorado Scholastic Art competition this year.

Included in the total are 35 Gold Key Winners and 35 Silver Key Winners, one American Vision Nominee, and two scholarship recipients.

Carson Tancig, student at Southern Hills Middle School, won American Vision Nominee for his architectural piece, Dust Bowl. Named ‘Best of Show,’ Carson’s piece drew accolades as one of five ‘most outstanding works of art’ selected from Colorado’s Gold Key recipients.

Emily Westbrook of Broomfield High received a scholarship from the University of Santa Fe Art and Design for her Gold Key winning photo, Chills.

Leif Blessing, Boulder High student, is the Weeks Scholarship recipient for his Silver Key winning photo Beauty.

Seventeen of the BVSD students received multiple awards.

Gold Key winners advance to the national competition with a chance to win cash grants, special financial aid consideration and an invitation to the Gala Ceremony held at Carnegie Hall in New York City.

In this year’s competition, students across Colorado submitted more than 5,000 original works to the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards program, which fosters the creative development of teenagers across the country by identifying emerging artists.

Award winning works will be on display Feb. 16 – March 6 at the Colorado History Center in Denver, with an awards ceremony on Feb. 21.
