I once worked a 10-hour shift on Christmas day, waiting tables at the Hotel Boulderado’s Corner Bar.
We provided overflow seating for the hotel’s main restaurant (it was called Teddy’s back then). Besides Burger King, Teddy’s was pretty much the only restaurant in town that was open on Christmas, and brutal doesn’t begin to describe the day’s working conditions. We were filled to the rafters with a stream of hungry people who just never let up. When one group stood up full and happy, another stood hovering over the table, raring to take the next seat and order up. My fellow waitress Stacey and I hosted, bussed and served the entire bar breakfast, lunch and dinner. We worked at a dead-run pace nonstop, giving those Christmas diners our very best. Most people were nice. To the others I wanted to say, “Look, I can’t help it if Kelly and Tim and Cari and everyone else took the Christmas shift off. I showed up. I’m here to make all your holiday dining wishes come true. So sit back and relax, the food will be here soon.”
It’s a shift I never wanted to repeat – and never did – but I can’t deny it built some character. Everyone should work at least one major holiday in their lives.
If you’re going out to eat on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day, know that menus will be specially designed for the day, and the timing a bit drawn out. In any case, be nice and enjoy. Here’s a list of Boulder restaurants open for Christmas:
2115 13th Street, 303.442.4344
The Boulderado’s premier restaurant, Spruce Farm & Fish, will serve brunch on Christmas Day from 7 a.m. – 1 p.m. and dinner from 2 p.m. – 8 p.m. I’m told that dinner seats are pretty much locked up, but there is some availability in the morning. Book now. Across the lobby from Spruce, The Corner Bar is open from 11 a.m. – 8 p.m. Just as it was in 1993, the bar is first come – first serve. Waitresses, buckle up.
p.s. Every year The Hotel Boulderado puts on a Christmas Day Buffet on its Mezzanine level, overlooking the hotel’s spectacular Christmas tree. But if you haven’t already made reservations for this event, you’re out of luck because it’s completely sold out (and is every year). You can get on the waitlist for this year’s event, and notification list for next year’s with an e-mail to firstname.lastname@example.org.
