The West End Tavern will screen the world premiere of Animal Planet’s upcoming adventure film “Melting: Last Race to the Pole” Wednesday, December 9 at 7:00 p.m.

The event will be co-sponsored by Upslope Brewing Company, who will be in house pouring special pints of their award-winning beer.

The film chronicles the unaided expedition of Eric Larsen and Ryan Waters to the North Pole. The two explorers traversed what might be the most brutal environment on earth, traveling over 500 miles in 53 days. Only 50 people in history have completed the journey, and since global warming is quickly melting the polar icecaps and the North Pole is becoming increasingly inaccessible, theirs may prove to be the last expedition of its kind.

Already an unfathomably difficult journey, the Arctic Ocean sea ice is melting faster than anywhere else on the planet, and Larsen’s film captures this first-hand. Along the way, Larsen and Waters are forced to ski over precarious, bending films of ice, swim wide swaths of open water, and even fend off hungry polar bears – all while racing to reach the Geographic North Pole before their supplies run out.

Telling the story of this incredible environment (and adventure) has been Eric’s primary mission for over 10 years, and he hopes this film will help garner as much interest as possible.

“The Arctic Ocean sea ice is disappearing, and North Pole expeditions may not be possible in the near future,” said Eric Larsen in a press release from Discovery Communications. ‘“Melting: Last Race to the Pole” is our attempt to tell the story of one of the last great frozen wildernesses left on the planet before it is forever gone.”

Both Eric and Ryan will be present at The West End Tavern to talk a bit about their journey and the making of the film.

The premiere will be the first film in The West End Tavern and Upslope Brewing Company’s Extreme Sports Movie Series. Every Wednesday night the Tavern will screen one of the best extreme sports films out there. There will be food and drink specials, such as $4 Baked-to-Order Cookie Sundaes, $3 Fries & Fixin’s, and $1 off Upslope Lagers.
