Everyone loves an exhilarating, action-packed cooking competition — and there’s no shortage of them on the Food Network, Bravo TV, and Cooking Channel. But how often do you get to see one up close and in person? Now is your chance!

That’s right, this Sunday, April 29, the Flatirons Food Film Festival is hosting an electrifying, all-day chef’s challenge right here in Boulder! Rumble in the Rockies features an All-Star group of chefs led by Ryan Gorby, executive chef at modern Asian street food eatery Cho77 in Denver, and Kyle Mendenhall, executive chef of Boulder’s Arcana featuring seasonal Coloradan fare. They are going head-to-head for the title of crowd favorite. You can’t beat an afternoon spent with community, good food, and fierce competition!

An Eastern versus Western cuisine battle, Gorby will lead the East team with chefs Jeff Stoneking of ChoLon and Thach Danny Tran of Ace Eat Serve, while Mendenhall’s West team includes chefs Steve Redzikowski of Acorn, Brider, & OAK at fourteenth, and Thomas Vigil formerly of Black Cat.

Each team is given an hour to prepare two dishes using noodles, eggs, and a mystery ingredient. Audience members will have hands-on participation, each receiving a sample of the dish so they can vote on their favorite.

The teams will also have to win the hearts of an all-female judging panel, including 5280 Magazine Food Editor Denise Mickelsen, Kelly Jeun, Co-Executive Chef of Frasca Food and Wine, and Sara Brito from Good Food 100 Restaurants list, who will ultimately decide their top pick.

After the challenge, a culinary comedy film out of Hong Kong called Cook Up a Storm will be screened for the audience.
