Taking a child to the hospital, even as a routine visit, can be one of the most terrifying experiences in a parent’s life. I have been there firsthand with my sister and her daughters, and I can tell you it’s awful.
Fortunately, parents in Colorado are able to go to a child-friendly, family-centered hospital — Children’s Hospital Colorado — which makes medical emergencies and doctor’s visits smooth and calm. My sister has always taken her daughters to Children’s Colorado because of the superb care they receive there and the trust they have for the doctors and staff.
“We are frequent visitors of Children’s Colorado,” Allison Patten said. “We love all of the doctors and nurses, always. The Care teams show immense concern and warmth for our children — they are amazing!”
For over 100 years, Children’s Colorado, a nonprofit Children’s Miracle Network Hospital, has been caring for more children than any other hospital in the region.
From the moment you walk into the hospital, it’s clear that this special place is devoted to children. It starts with the inviting lobby — brightly colored, welcoming, and filled with plenty of fun and distracting things for children to look at.
Rather than having your child ride around in a wheelchair, Children’s Colorado has developed an alternative: their signature Little Red Wagons. That way, going to an appointment has an element of fun the whole way there.
All of the nurses and doctors I have met there have been so kind, so good with kids, and gentle, even when it seems that being gentle is impossible. For example, pricking a squirming nine-month-old baby with a needle and drawing blood.
Children’s Colorado has been nationally and internationally recognized as one of the top pediatric hospitals. Named as one of the nation’s outstanding pediatric hospitals by U.S. News & World Report, it is distinguished not only for its comprehensive pediatric care, but also for its medical, research, education and advocacy programs. It was the winner of the 2015 American Hospital Association-McKesson Quest for Quality Prize, has been recognized for excellence in nursing from the American Nursing Credentialing Centers and is one of the most sought-after places to work for medical professionals.
The world-class Children’s Colorado network includes 16 locations in Colorado, including the main hospital located at Anschutz Medical Campus in Aurora. Each one has wonderful distractions designed just for kids. Case in point, a 100,000-piece LEGO replica of the hospital waiting to greet the children who enter there.
At all 16 locations, children have the option of being visited by one of Children’s Colorado’s 44 Prescription Pets. The specially trained dogs offer laughter, connection, and comfort, both for the sick patients as well as the dedicated professionals who are there to help them.
Children’s Colorado also partnered with the Denver Broncos so that patients can feel the same love and support from the team in the hospital just as the team feels from its fans on the field. It inspired this brilliant song during the Broncos Super Bowl winning season (see video below).
Children’s Colorado continues its amazing work with this mantra: “There’s magic in our energy, our spaces, our people and our discoveries. There’s even magic in our motivation: our unblinking belief that we can eradicate childhood disease — so that one day, like magic, children will no longer need us.”
But until then, Children’s Colorado needs the help of volunteers and donors just like you. Visit their website to see how you can help.
