Black Friday and Cyber Monday can bring on the blues.
Oh sure, it’s fun to buy things. But for many the consumption fest ushered in by these dates feels completely at odds with the spirit of holidays ahead.
If you’re in this camp, you’re going to love #GivingTuesday, a global day of giving that taps the power of social media and collaboration. It’s essentially a day to kick off the charitable season, and the movement is growing.
This year local non-profit (and this month’s Featured Friend) I Have A Dream Foundation of Boulder County is participating to raise money for college savings accounts that directly benefit students in Boulder. Here’s the best part: donations on December 1 will be matched by up to 300% by the 1:1 Foundation and a corporate donor, up to $500 per donation.
This means that if you donate $500 on December 1st, then “I Have a Dream” will receive $1500 for college savings accounts for its “Dreamers” – motivated but underprivileged students right here in our community. Only donations made on December 1st will be tripled.
All funds raised will help open college savings accounts for Dreamers and set them on the path to and through college. Saving for college can be a game-changer for children in low-income communities: $500 in a college savings account means a low-income student is four times more likely to graduate from college.
Set your alarms. Beginning at 12:01 a.m. on Tuesday December 1st, you have 24 hours to give in order to qualify for the match. To participate, simply visit ihaveadreamboulder.org on December 1st and click on donate.
