Rocky Grass in Lyons

If you’re really lucky (and organized), you’re holding a ticket to one of Colorado’s best music events happening this weekend in Lyons:  the 42nd annual Rocky Grass Festival.  |

Tickets to the epic bluegrass party sold out  in back in January. With a lineup of headliners it’s easy to see why. Bela Fleck, Ricky Skaggs, Bruce Hornsby, Alison Krauss, Sam Bush and other eminent musicians make Rocky Grass a singular experience.

The festival is put on by Planet Bluegrass, the same people who produce the world famous Telluride Bluegrass Festival. Headquartered in Lyons, Planet Bluegrass is a hometown hero. The group was able to renovate its heavily damaged and absolutely gorgeous outdoor concert venue next to the St. Vrain river — in time to accommodate Rocky Grass just 10 months after September’s floods.

Lyons is thankful.  The town of 2,000 essentially doubles in size during Rocky Grass, seeing a major economic impact. Plus the festival is truly a point of pride for Lyons – and not missing a year is yet another illustration of serious grit.

If you’re not lucky enough to have a ticket to Rocky Grass in hand, here are two excellent ideas:

First, run-don’t-walk to get a ticket to the Folks Festival in Lyons, August 15-17. Another outstanding lineup awaits, with musicians like Brandi Carlile, Randy Newman and Ani DiFranco.

Second, put bluegrass.com on your December calendar and buy your tickets to next year’s Rocky Grass early.

You’re welcome.
