Cheech Marin to host upcoming gala
Anyone who knows Boulder-based There With Care really loves this non-profit.
Main reason? The mission. By helping families with critically ill children navigate everyday life – think meals, transportation, supplies, auto repair – There With Care eases the burden of truly desperate circumstances.
Unique to the cause is a Hollywood connection.
There With Care’s founder was a movie producer and enlists the support of friends from her past career to further There With Care’s work.
This makes for uber cool fundraisers. There With Care’s galas are glitzy, glamie, fun events that mix entertainers, movies and music to generate fundraising magic.
In 2011, gala attendees saw Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows before it screened anywhere else in the country. The raucous party that followed included cast and crew as well as hundreds of genuine movie relics – like Harry’s invisibility cloak and the marauder’s map.
This year comedy legend Cheech Marin will host There With Care’s double-header shindig, A Red Carpet Adventure, September 28th in Denver, and 29th at the Boulder Theater. Get your tickets early.
Marin is an actor, director, producer, musician and renowned art collector, but he’s probably best known as the Chicano half of Cheech and Chong, the comedy duo who made hilarious satires in the 70s and 80s.
As MC, Marin will pilot the mic – telling stories and orchestrating the event’s knockout slate of musical talent: Justin Kauflin, Zach Heckendorf, Heather Maloney, Kenny Passarelli, Natasha Marin, and the In-Tune Ensemble. This is one not to miss.
As a producer on the first three Harry Potter movies, The Cove (Oscar win), Chasing Ice (Oscar nomination), Mrs. Doubtfire and others, DuPré Pesmen was inspired to create There With Care after struggling to manage everyday life when her husband was battling cancer.
Here in Boulder, in Denver and now in the Bay Area, the There With Care team applies a creative, yet nuts-and-bolts approach to help families stay on their feet in the dark days of critical illness.
“We provide a listening ear, love, care and concern during a very fragile time,” explains Kathryn Messman, one of a small staff at There With Care’s Boulder headquarters. “We try to determine the family’s heaviest burden, and then figure out how to lift it.”
In one case that meant arranging the care and walking of dogs for a father who didn’t want to leave his little boy in the oncology ward. For others, it’s fun and tender child care for siblings who need love and attention too. There With Care’s volunteer groups Team Bake and Team Chop make wholesome scratch food every week, distributed along with other groceries. Drivers drive parents too distracted to concentrate.
Whatever the remedy, it all helps tremendously. Health care providers, hospitals, and social services agencies have come to rely heavily on There With Care staff and volunteers.
