Five favorite Boulder gift shops

Everything you could want, right here at home |

I have two super bright nephews who love to go to Wal-Mart at midnight on black Friday. They aren’t seeking cut rate electronics; they just can’t miss this spectacle of Americana. I think their comical approach keeps the gloom of the thing at bay. Anyway, they tell me that the red herring of black Friday is the deals really aren’t so stellar.

I’m reminded of the amazing local gift shops that make shopping here stellar indeed. Boulder is chock full of unique and affordable gift shops filled with goods that reliably knock socks off. Next Saturday is Small Business Saturday, the perfect day to keep it local. Check out our favorites gift shops here, and when you’re done add your own ideas – you could win a $25 gift certificate to your favorite shop.

Come for the Chocolove Bars, stay for the endless eccentricities. Time gets away from you here. This shop is as extensively stocked as it is gorgeously arranged. Bayleaf boasts international specialty foods, books, art, rare and unique items for home (check the new Ave Maria Domus) and so much more. It’s like an exotic gallery where you can afford the things you fall in love with. Locally owned and operated for 10 years, Bayleaf’s guerilla marketing with Chocolove Bars is brilliant. They offer every flavor for just $2 a bar (the big ones). And now through Christmas, you may find one with a “golden ticket” inside: cash bills from $1 – $100, local restaurant gift certificates, and a grand prize 1 oz gold bar.

BLISSBLISS | 1643 Pearl Street
An absolute go-to for three things: 1) Inventive home décor. 2) Distinctive and affordably priced jewelry. 3) Gorgeous paper products. And the trove of treasures extends far beyond these categories. Scattered throughout this expansive space are thousands of effects that are simultaneously comical and beautiful. You’ll be bursting and gasping all over the place. It’s the one place guaranteed to make everyone on your list happy. In fact, put a Bliss run first on your list and you’ll gain gobs of time for other holiday pursuits.

A local fixture for 33 years, this is the place to go for all the fun lovers on your list. You’ll find uber creative playthings for little kids, big kids and adults. The best part? You can try before you buy. Into The Wind is a Pearl Street funfest, packed with tourists and locals sampling every gadget, game and entertainment oddity under the sun, from Bucky Balls and magic kits to Jesus figurines. The store’s core business is kites – a zillion of them, many locally designed and engineered.

PeppercornPEPPERCORN | 1235 Pearl Street
Some might neglect to list this much recognized, always acclaimed Pearl Street superstar, but that would be wrong. Here since 1977, Peppercorn is still fresh and intriguing, with a profusion of products for the home, especially the kitchen. Colorful cookbooks, top-line European appliances, and a million ingenious gadgets are just the beginning. Peppercorn’s secret is sourcing, and its buyers use their far-and-wide reach to bring Boulder a tremendous variety of the practical, the beautiful and the exotic. Not the most affordable of the shops we’ve listed here – but certainly high on the value spectrum – Peppercorn is a special place to buy special things.

  1. I love the Boulder Army Store at 1545 Pearl St. It’s more of a camping and outdoor goods store than an Army surplus store. There’s tons of great stuff to browse through and it’s in a very cool old building.

  2. Two Hands Paperie, 803 Pearl Street. Originally known for its beautiful handmade paper from around the world and selection of exquisite journals and stationery, the shelves are now chock full of inspiring arts and craft materials . Be inspired for your holiday DIY projects, peruse the wall of ribbon, admire the unique writing instruments, purchase a class for a gift (a gift that will keep on giving). Let the creative side take over this holiday season. Plus afterwards you can land next door at Nick n Willys for an infamous take n bake pizza. Gifts purchased, dinner handled. We call that one-stop shopping.
