Lunch is back, baby!

Mid-day hot spot re-opens for business |

Café Classico re-opened today, hosting a crowd of folks happy to be reunited for lunch again. In September, flood damage shuttered the West Boulder Senior Center at 909 Arapahoe Avenue, putting this cherished senior meet-up spot on hold for repairs.

“Our close-knit clique managed to get together while the center was closed, but we’re sure glad it’s open again,” explains Win Nolin, who with his wife Jeanne has been coming to lunch and Tuesday night dinners for years. Win, Jeanne, and friend Ena Russell queued up with dozens of others for spaghetti & meatballs or salmon & veggies.

Also reinstated to its West Senior Center base today is Meals On Wheels, the local miracle that continued to deliver hot lunches to hundreds of clients despite the monster storm. Short terming from the East Senior Center kitchen since September, the organization and its army of volunteer drivers were once again assembling hot lunch packages for delivery from the West Center today.

Meals on Wheels executive director Francea Phillips was on hand, welcoming the first 25 Café Classico patrons back with poinsettias. They didn’t last long.

“This is really the one place our seniors can meet for a regular meal time,” explains Tasia Benedict, volunteer coordinator and client services manager for Meals on Wheels. “We’re glad to be back.”

We’re glad things are back in order too. Meals On Wheels is a vital community service provider – one of the many reasons Boulder County is a great place for people of all ages to live and thrive. Since 1969, Meals On Wheels has provided nearly 2 million meals to Boulder County clients, preparing 81,000 meals in 2012 alone.
